Creative Debut, HM90 and how Art Society Soho went east...

Jessika Wahls

Stopjectify being barely over, something else popped on my radar. Over the past couple of years, Instagram has provided me with a wealth of opportunities to say the least, and this time was no different. Creative Debut is a free global platform for the brightest creative talents, showcasing emerging artists and they also happen to be one of the Instagram accounts i follow.

Alex and Calum, are the names behind the brand and when they did a shout out that they are looking to collaborate with London Art Collectives, i didn't hesitate to casually drop them a note about Art Society Soho , the art collective i have been a member of since it's birth last year.

As it is with opportunities, this one didn't wait long to emerge and after chatting briefly online, i set up a meeting between the two of them  Martin, who runs ASS and myself, to talk about what exactly they had in mind. Shortly after , Martin and i  ventured off east to the Black and White Building at 74 Rivington street, which was to become the home for our first ASS showcase this far east.

We had a look at the venue during the launch of another art collectives exhibition and got excited about the possibilities a space as large as this one would offer us, so after a good look around and a chat with Creative Debut, we said yes, to what a month later became the hugely successful launch of our month long stint of the HM90 showcase of ASS members.

my inspiration for the shows theme came from a piece i originally  had planned to create as a collaborative work between myself and Hand & Lock , the embroiderers to the royal family, who hosted my solo show in their premisses in Fitzrovia the previous year. With time ticking away and Stopjectify absorbing most of it, it looked unlikely that we would be able to collaborate in time for her majesties birthday, but i still fancied the idea of creating a piece about the queen, which will eventually become a small piece of a larger project i have in  mind.

So when Creative Debut offered us the space for a launch in early may, i figured this could be the perfect opportunity and subject to create a show around. Martin agreed and HM90 was born.

The submissions of our ASS members came in and it became obvious that this show was going to be as diverse and interesting as it was cheeky, which was to be expected, given the nature of Art Society Soho.

With only a month to pull all of it together, Martin and i had our hands full, especially because the PV was coupled with the Whitechapel Galleries First Thursday  initiative which, to top it all off, even added us as one of 4 destinations of their 'art-walking tour'. So the pressure was on.

Once the day came all had fallen into place nicely, we had a massive turn out throughout the night, we had music by Dj Yoms and even a bit of accordion music by our member Tom baker.

To get a feel about the buzz of the night, i added some pictures to the Gallery below ( so you can see for yourself what you missed out on)

The show still runs until the 27th of April, so if you want to take a good look yourself, i suggest popping down there. It's really worth it, and yes, do take my word for it ;)
