Art Without Freedom of Speech is Propaganda
Hand embroidery
40 x 30cm
A visual comment on an art world that has become completely antithetical to creativity, free speech and thought.
As artists we need freedom of speech to challenge the viewers of our work to confront overlooked assumptions and preconceptions, enabling them, perhaps, to view the world through a fresh, unencumbered lens.
Only prescribed subjects and opinions are allowed now. Anything that doesn’t conform to the current orthodoxy gets either cancelled, boycotted, smeared or quietly iced out.
The shiny, reflective party balloons represent the vacuity of such a position, since all it can produce is either derivative, decorative or propaganda, reflecting prescribed beliefs as well as the only acceptable political affiliations.
This, of course, is why I’m funding this exhibition by way of directly approaching potential patrons, bypassing the gatekeepers and arbiters of ethics that dictate every institution, and making sure that alternative perspectives are presented to the public, emboldening them to stand by their own beliefs.
It isn’t just for the public, but equally to send a message to other artists who feel stifled in their creativity and opportunities of expression: There are always ways around it - you must not capitulate!
