The Sound of Birth
Hand embroidery
70 x 50cm
Having read in excess of 15 books on pregnancy and birth throughout my own pregnancy journey in preparation, I have become fascinated with what can only be described as the most ordinary miracle of life: Birth.
An experience that connected me to most women the world over and that is unique to the female sex.
The phases of birth; the pain, the fear, the ecstasy and the sound. The Sound.
The sound of the labouring mothers from moaning, to humming, to mooing and screaming and shouting is a unique and special sound that ushers our children from one world to the next. It is their sound that merges with ours when they take their first breath. The way in which our own sound vibrations can aid with pain relief and relaxation, with dilation and release, is nothing short of magical.
We don’t all get the birth we want (I certainly didn’t, after having been diagnosed with preeclampsia, which meant home-birth was off the table). Many women have to reconcile the bullying and obstetric violence they experienced while birthing with the relief of holding their baby in their arms once all is said and done, and the barrage of mixed emotions this can elicit. It’s a complex and often painful subject for women and much art can, has and will be made about it.
This piece however is simply a celebration of women and their natural power.
